WAGS DIVISION V

TRAINING PLAN

The attached plan focuses on four areas: Conditioning, Individual Skills, Team/Group Skills, and a new area, Team building.  I have provided a brief description of what these are and what our goals will be.

Conditioning.  We will be improving our strength, flexibility, agility, speed and endurance.  I am concerned with the upper body strength and knees and joints in preparation for the challenges of Division 1 (and WAGS) play.  When I speak of speed, I am focusing on both the physical and mental speed of the game.  The players will take an introduction to tactics test.  I will introduce the subjects over a series of emails.  Physically fast players are dangerous, but a player who can think and "see the field" as fast as they move is UNSTOPPABLE.  Our goal for conditioning is for players to be effective for 35 minutes of straight play.

Individual Skills.   Every practice involves improving individual skills.  Confidence with and without the ball is what we will focus on.  Players need to continue to practice on their own using the practice booklet and their own imagination.  Coaches will provide guidance on areas that need improvement, but the time and effort is the players' responsibility.  Our goal is for each player to improve one area of her game.

Team/Group Skills.  The technical side of attacking and defending as a team will be stressed this season.  We will train defense and attacking team skills to improve our time and space.  In defense this means denying opportunities for the opposing team to develop an attack.  In the attack, we want to organize quickly and un-balance the other team's defense to open scoring chances.  We will do this through small-sided games, and see if we can transition the skills to scrimmages.

Team Building.  High performing soccer teams have the ability to COMMUNICATE and COORDINATE under PRESSURE.  We will be giving the players team-building exercises to improve communication skills and the ability to organize effectively under pressure of a game.  One aspect is the PENALTY KICK CHALLENGE.  Just like the shoot-outs in international soccer, the players will compete each practice for rewards.  This is also great training for our 'Keepers.

We are all proud of what we have accomplished in ODSL.  I expect even more improvement and accomplishments in the future.  The success of this plan depends on the individual and collective commitment of the players (time and effort) and parents (time and transportation).  Please review the plan with your family.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Coach Paul or me.
