TIP #6 - FIRST ATTACKER
The FIRST Attacker is the player with the BALL.
That makes her the most important player on the field. The FIRST
Attacker's has only TWO choices to make:
1. SHOOT, or
2. Make sure her
team KEEPS POSSESSION of the ball by controlling the ball, dribbling
to space, or passing to an OPEN attacking player (this could be a
goalkeeper, by-the-way).
The FIRST Attacker's decision will depend on
where she is on the field. If you are within 20-25 yards of the other
team's goal and you are not marked, you should be thinking SHOOT, SHOOT,
SHOOT.
If you are within 20-25 yards of OUR goal, you
should be thinking CLEAR, CLEAR, CLEAR to the WIDE midfield.
As a FIRST Attacker, you will want to be
peeking up from the ball to look for:
1. What is the defense
doing
2. What is your
support
3. Chances to move the
ball to the weak side
You will also want to COMMUNICATE what you want
to do with the ball without giving an advantage to the defense. Short
orders like "THROUGH," "OVERLAP," "WEAKSIDE,"
"SHOT," let your team know your intentions, without giving the
defense time to react.
Some common mistakes by the First Attacker:
1. Poor first touch
2. Dribbling directly
into an opponent
3. Passing into the
opponent
4. Poor vision of what
is going on around her
5. Loosing focus of
the ball
6. Not COMMUNICATING
with your team
7. Forgetting WHERE
you are on the field.
