WAGS DIVISION V

     TIP #1 - OVERVIEW

In soccer, the tactics you use on the field depend on who has possession of
the ball.  Duh!

When your opponent is in possession (SAD ball), all 11 players on your team
are defenders.  Your main objective is to pursue and get the ball back
(HAPPY ball).  As a team, you must work together to DELAY the attacking team
from getting position ahead of your defense.  Organize in DEPTH in front of
the attacking team so they can not get into the space behind your defense.
You will need to communicate together to keep your defense BALANCED so the
attacking team can not have unmarked players in position to score on your
goal.  And, you need to COMPACT your team in front of your goal to force the
attackers to dribble or force a pass that allows your team to steal the ball
back.

When you have possession (HAPPY ball), all 11 players on your team are
attackers (yes, that includes the goalkeeper!)  Your main objective is to
get a player and the ball in position to shoot and score goals (HAPPY team
and HAPPY coaches).  Again, as a team, you must work together to PENETRATE
the other team's defense by passing or dribbling the ball behind their
players.  You want to position yourselves in DEPTH so that every player has
two or three passing options to maintain possession (HAPPY ball).  Every
player needs to keep MOVING so the defending team has difficulty marking,
and you spring one of our attackers free to shoot.  You will also want to
spread out (WIDTH) to make the defending team open up, and give us greater
space to place the ball and players in position to shoot and score goals
(MORE HAPPINESS).
