     26.  (25 points) At a LMVSA Patriot game, we have 10 players available to play with no substitutions.  The opponent has chosen to play with all 11 players.  The opponent’s method of play is 4 defenders, 3 midfielders, and 3 forwards.  There are many answers for this situation problem.  The main point was to see players think about the options.  Here is one way to approach the situation.

What method of play (formation) should we use?

3 Defenders, 4 Midfielders, 2 Forwards

Explain what makes your formation strong:

This formation keeps a strong defensive posture from the midfield by giving us numbers up when our opponent attacks.  The formation also keeps a numbers up advantage in the midfield for keeping possession and starting the attack.

Explain what makes your formation weak:

The formation gives us a disadvantage in the attack by sending 6 players against 7 defenders and midfielders.

What TACTICAL instructions do you give the players to overcome our player shortage?

Goalkeeper needs to direct the defense to ensure all attackers are marked.  Upon gaining control of the ball, send the ball far forward to the attackers.

Markup all opponents in our defensive end of the field and play man-to-man.  Defenders need to close fast and delay the player with the ball

Communicate

Midfielders should look to make through passes between the four defenders. Be quick on the attack, but recover quickly on defense.

Forwards should look to make their penetrating runs between the four defenders.  Shoot on every opportunity.
