G.I.G.N.

Official Name: Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie
Nationale
Translation: Intervention Group of the National
French Police Force
Country of Origin: France
Formed: 1974
Parent Organization: National French Police Force
Background:
The GIGN was originally formed in
1973 from the anti-riot police force known as the ECRI (roughly translated,
Regional Equipped Commandos of Intervention). By March 1, 1974 the new
official name for the group was the GIGN. Less than two weeks after their
inception, the GIGN was already at work neutralizing a well armed force.
The GIGN is one of the most powerful anti-terrorist units in the world.
Between 1974 and 1985, the GIGN successfully completed over 650 missions which
freed more than 500 hostages and eliminated over 1000 terrorists while only
losing 5 operatives. Originally the GIGN consisted of 15 elite
members. Now the entire organization consists of about 100 operatives as
of 2002.
Due
to the low number of members, the GIGN is known for its innovative ways of
devising and executing a mission plan. The GIGN also operates overseas as
well. They have performed in Djibouti, New Caledonia, Guadeloupe, Saudi
Arabia, Lebanon, Sudan, and Comoros.
